Daily Devotional: Psalms 12:1-8

Ps 12:1-8

Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception. May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master?" "Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them." And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.

2 Tim 3:10-11

You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.

As we read our Bible, we see so many times when people were delivered out of some trial, some sickness, or some problem, yet they never knew exactly how or what God was doing to deliver them. At the time they may have thought it was just good luck or they may have just dismissed it as something that happens. We do this a lot of times today. We do not have any special word or revelation from God telling us that he intervened or that he changed our circumstances or he healed us, so we just think that we were fortunate or lucky.

James says that we do not receive because we do not ask. He also says that when we ask without believing or when we ask with selfish motives, we will not get it from the Lord. The promises of God are sure and he has promised to be with us, to protect us and to deliver us from evil. This does not mean that we will get everything we ask for. It means that when we truly trust him, he does give us what we need, what is best for us (remembering that “best” is our eternal salvation), and then often a lot more so we can enjoy his blessings now.

O Lord God, I thank you and I praise you because I know that in my life, I see so many times that you have intervened and delivered me from bad people, hard times, extreme temptations and so much more. You have given me what I needed when I did not know where it could come from or how I could get it. You have put people in my life so many times, just when I needed them the most. You have also given me so much to enjoy, even now. I thank you for family that loves me and for friends who encourage me. Use me in your service to bring honor to your name and help me use what I have to help others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
