Daily Devotional: Proverbs 8:1-11

Prov 8:1-11

Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: “To you, O men, I call, and my cry is to the children of man. O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them. They are all straight to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

Rom 11:33

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

Wisdom guides us and is our teacher. Wisdom from God is righteous and leads us in a straight path. Wisdom is our instructor and shows us how to live with others and be at peace, both with them and with ourselves. We all have some of this wisdom in us and use it some of the time. But, too often, we act on impulse, or we allow our emotions to control us instead of allowing wisdom to lead us.

True wisdom (from God) is priceless! It is more precious than the purest of gold, it is better than the rarest of jewels. Yet, it is spurned by many because they see it as being restrictive or as taking away their freedom. But the truth is that every choice we make in life keeps us from doing or saying the opposite of that choice. The wisdom from God will give us a better life with peace of mind.

In our text, wisdom is personified and speaks to us. We all do well to listen. Not every choice we make in life is a matter of right or wrong. Most are simply choices we make about mundane things in life. But some of these may have consequences along with other implications. Think carefully! Choose wisely! Listen to wisdom!

O Lord God, give me wisdom to act according to your will and therefore, to do what is really best for me in every situation. Help me think before I act or speak, to listen before I respond, and to make choices that will lead to peace. Fill me with your Spirit so I will overflow with your love, with kindness and with patience. We all face difficult things in life, and I ask you to guide my wife and me in our daily struggles. Increase our faith so we will always put our trust in you and your wisdom. In the blessed and holy name of Jesus I pray.
