Daily Devotional: Proverbs 10:6-11

Prov 10:6-11

Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence. The memory of the righteous is a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin. Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out. Whoever winks the eye causes trouble, and a babbling fool will come to ruin. The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

1 Peter 3:8-9

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

In Genesis chapter four, God told Cain: “If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” We all make that same choice daily, we either serve sin by serving ourselves or we conquer sin and serve righteousness. Jesus said we cannot serve two masters, and it applies here as well as in the original context.

In the book of Romans, Paul explained this principle and said we either serve the flesh (that is our personal desires and selfish emotions) or we serve righteousness. He then explains that serving the flesh leads to death but the free gift of devoting our lives to righteousness is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. It is up to us to make the right choice, and we do make a choice each time we are tempted to do anything that is contrary to the will of God.

Paul then explains that we become slaves of the one we choose to serve; slaves of sin or slaves of obedience which leads to righteousness. This righteousness leads to sanctification, being separate from the world around us and becoming more and more like Jesus. This is accomplished as we allow the Spirit to control and mold us into the likeness of our Savior. In the words of Joshua: “Choose you this day whom you will serve.” The choice is yours and it is mine to make.

O Lord God, give me wisdom to want to do what is right and to live for you. Fill me with your Spirit and help me not grieve him by rejecting his bidding and nudging in my heart. Give me wisdom to follow his will for me because I know that his will is always your will and the will of Jesus. Remind me of the end results of sin and keep before me the reward of living for you. Give me patience to endure life on earth with its trials, but also to enjoy every moment because you have given it to me. Thank you for being my God and loving me. I pray in Jesus name.
