Daily Devotional: Proverbs 25:25-28

Prov 25:25-28

25 Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. 26 Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. 27 It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory. 28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.

Rom 12:3-5

For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Did you ever think that you were indispensable? Perhaps you are the only person at your workplace that can do your job or perhaps you know things that others do not know or understand how to apply what they know. You may be the best at what you do but the bad news for us all is that we can be replaced. In fact, the better you are at what you do or the more critical your job is, the sooner you will probably be replaced one day. Your job will be posted before your obituary.

Who is your great-grandfather or great-grandmother? Do you know their full names? If you actually know this, you are in the minority of people. We love our families, and they love us, our parents and grandparents. We love our kids and grandkids. But after a few years, our families will have to research to find our names or anything about us. In the scheme of things, we are unimportant.

But each of us has special talents, unique opportunities, connections that only we have, and we are to use each of these to the glory of God. We are to use the abilities that God has given us to make the lives of others better, to lead them to Jesus, and to help them serve the Lord. You and your name may be forgotten, but the influence of your life can live on for many generations to come! You do matter. Your life matters. Think highly of yourself, just not more than you should.

O Lord God, you have blessed me with so many abilities in life, and with each of these you have given me opportunities to use them. Give me wisdom to see these and to honor you by doing my best to do good to everybody. I need more self-control to get things done that need to be done, so I need you to empower me and motivate me. I know that there is no limit to what can be accomplished when you get all the glory for it being done, but sometimes I forget to practice this. Increase my faith! I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
