Daily Devotional: Proverbs 30:15-19
Prov 30:15-19
15 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give. Three things are never satisfied; four never say, “Enough”: 16 Sheol, the barren womb, the land never satisfied with water, and the fire that never says, “Enough.” 17 The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. 18 Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand: 19 the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a virgin.
Col 3:5
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
How much is enough? When is our house large enough? When is our car fine enough? When are our clothes fashionable enough? When is our farm large enough? There is no end to enough. I once was in a discussion about this with a farmer and he said (tongue in cheek) that all he wanted was the land that adjoined his. The more we have, the more we want, on and on.
Paul said he had learned to be content with his state in life. He had known wealth, and he had known poverty. He had known a life of ease, and he had known a life of persecution. He had been at the top of popularity, and he had been despised. In all this, he had learned contentment in Jesus Christ. He had all he needed in Jesus. This is why he said for us to “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.” Contentment, joy, peace, all come from trusting in the Lord.
I can’t help but wonder if Agur had been alive in our day if he would have included a fifth thing to his list; the way of an airplane in the sky. What we call “nature”, and the “laws of nature” are wonderful gifts of God. It is marvelous to watch an eagle soar in the sky, even without flapping its wings it rises higher and higher until almost out of sight. How does this great bird know how to do this and yet the hummingbird has to move its wings so much one can hardly see them. The answer is that God planned it all and gave each the instinct to use what he has given it. Our lesson: use what God has given us as he intended it to be used.
O Lord God, help me always be amazed at your wisdom, your greatness, and your power shown to me in so many ways in all your creation. The majestic eagle, the tiny ant, the beautiful flowers, and the soothing sound of the brook all speak volumes about who you are as the only true God. Help me be content with what I have and with my place in life. Help me remember that true success is being in Jesus and using what I have to serve and help others so that your name will be glorified. Thank you for all you do for me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
