Daily Devotional: Proverbs 31:1-3
Prov 31:1-3
1 The words of King Lemuel. An oracle that his mother taught him: 2 What are you doing, my son? What are you doing, son of my womb? What are you doing, son of my vows? 3 Do not give your strength to women, your ways to those who destroy kings.
Eph 5:3-4
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
The son of a King is to conduct himself wisely, which includes being morally pure at all times. He is Royalty and there is a name to honor. As the children of God, we are royalty and we are to be morally pure at all times, but Paul goes even farther and says that we must not even joke about immorality. This is because it is not a laughing matter to our Father, but it is an offense worthy of death.
The creators of sitcoms have used all kinds of immorality as their subjects, but it has been for a specific reason. They want the “Christian” population to accept it as being normal. By having us laugh at it, whether it be heterosexual, homosexual, or transgender, or even cross-dressing, we get accustomed to it as an alternative way of life and accept it as normal behavior. This takes years to happen, but Satan is very patient, wanting us to forget what is right and accepting sin as normal.
Yesterday we talked about becoming easily angry. One of the first things we see Jesus do in his ministry is cleansing the temple of the money changers and their animals. It really made him mad when he saw how they treated the Temple of God with vulgarity, and that for their own financial gain. For us, as his children, it is vulgarity in the worst sense when we laugh at sin or make it acceptable.
We live in a wicked world, but we are not to become a part of it or let it become a part of us. At best, we will be influenced by the world around us to some degree, but we need to always be on our guard against the acceptance of sin. We are to pattern our lives after the life of Jesus, which will cause us to imitate the Father as well. Our goal is to live up to the glory of God while we are here on earth.
O Lord God, forgive me when I accept the false ideas of the world and help me rid my heart of all that is impure. Create in me a clean heart and a steadfast spirit to want to always be like Jesus. Guide me and empower me to be what you want me to become and to accomplish what you want me to do with my life each day. I ask you to be with and take care of those who are suffering because of flooding, as well as those who have suffered drought. Use me to help where I can. Be gracious to those who are being persecuted for Jesus. In his name I pray.
