Daily Devotional: Proverbs 31:26-31

Prov 31:26-31

26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

1 Peter 3:1-4

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.

Have you ever heard the expression that age has been kind to someone or maybe the opposite, age has not been kind to that person? Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain. No matter how hard I try, at seventy-six I don’t look like I did at twenty-five! Our bodies tend to take on imperfections, our hair is not the same (if we still have any), and our skin tends to wrinkle. Physical beauty fades.

But what matters is that we fear the Lord. What counts is the hidden person of the heart. What we need to work for is the inward and unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. This is accomplished when we put God first and in doing this, we serve other people. We build this beauty when we learn to not be selfish or self-centered. Our life is spent helping others be what they can become.

No one enjoys being around a person who is loud and boisterous. We don’t like to be in the presence of a person who spends all their time telling others how great they are, what they have accomplished, or how much money they have. There is a time to rejoice over our accomplishments, with the right people, at the right time, but not all the time with anyone who will listen. Love does not brag.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for all you have given me in life. You have taught me many lessons with some of the trials and hardships, but you have showered me with so many good people and good times. I thank you and I praise you! Give me a pure heart, a servant attitude, and the mindset to encourage others. Help me remember that whatever good I may accomplish, it is done only by your grace. Help me be grateful today. I pray in the name of Jesus.
