Daily Devotional: Psalms 2:1-6

Ps 2:1-6

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”

1 Peter 3:8-9

Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, bless, for to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

Those of you who know me know that I have some pretty strong views on several things, including politics and religion. I believe very much that my views are correct and if others want what is best, they should agree with what I believe. But I also know that my views and I are not the standard of truth. So, when you disagree with me, I do believe you to be wrong, but I do not pass judgment on you or your views. We can still be family, friends and fellow believers.

One thing that I remember my dad telling me when I was a teenager is that as a kid, he had a hound dog. When there was a full moon, that hound dog would howl at the moon all night long. When the moon changed, the dog quit howling, but the moon never changed and in about a month it was all repeated. We can get upset over things that we cannot change (including truth as revealed by God), but when it is all over, those things remain the same. Don’t be like the hound dog.

God is in control. He allows Satan to do a lot of things, and he allows bad people to mistreat good people. He lets rulers and nations rise, even ones that persecute his children, but in the end, he is in control of what, who, and how much. Our place as his children is to trust him, to love each other, and to dwell in unity as much as possible as far as it depends on us. Since I am not deity, I cannot explain God or his actions. In the book of Revelation, we see a lot of the story. There is an ongoing battle between God and Satan. God has already won. We must choose sides for eternity. Save your nerves, lower your blood pressure and trust God.

O Lord God, thank you for being in control of what is happening on earth. Often, I do not understand why you do what you do or why you allow what you allow but I do trust you in all things to work things out. Thank you for the freedoms that I enjoy in this country. Please be with those who do not have the freedom to worship you. I ask for their physical protection, but even more, I ask that you increase their faith and give them peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
