Daily Devotional: Psalms 2:7-12
Ps 2:7-12
I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Rom 8:26-27
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Jesus told a parable of the wise builder who built his house on the rock and the foolish one who built his house on the sand. The house built on rock was able to withstand the storms, but the one built on sand came crashing down. He also told about five wise virgins and five foolish ones who were waiting on the bridegroom to come. The wise women were ready and entered the party, but the foolish ones were refused admittance to the wedding feast.
Wisdom dictates that we respect God as God, and we follow Jesus as our Lord. He said that if we love him, we will obey him. If we trust him as the Son of God, as our redeemer and as our Savior, we will want to imitate him and be just like him in our attitudes and in our actions. He faced the same things we face in life and in so doing, he left us an example to follow. He personified the mind of God to us.
This obedience is not just keeping a set of rules. It is a heart that is fixed on being like him because we love him, and we trust him, therefore, we want to live with him in eternity. Doing all the right things in the right way without a heart that is set on him is futile because it is serving self, not him. We obey him because we are saved by his grace. As his people, the Spirit will live in us, he will empower us, and he will intercede for us, according to the will of God. Praise the Lord!
O Lord God, what a blessing to be your child and to know that you love me, that you have forgiven me by the blood of Jesus and to be assured that you are with me every moment of every day. Thank you for your Spirit who lives in me and who is continually molding me into the likeness of Jesus. Forgive me when I fail to follow his bidding and cause him grief. Give me greater self-control and more patience to become the person you want me to be. As I face this new year, I ask you to help me be more dedicated to you and your will. In Jesus’ name.
