Daily Devotional: Psalms 9:9-12
Ps 9:9-12
The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Sing praises to the Lord, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his deeds! For he who avenges blood is mindful of them; he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.
Eph 1:7-10
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
God has plans for his creation. His plans involve earthly kingdoms and nations, but they also include individuals throughout history. A few of these include people such as Noah, Moses, Abraham, Ruth, David, Esther, John the baptizer, and then Jesus. After this, there was Peter, Paul, and John to name a few. But God’s plan is still ongoing, and it still includes nations and individuals such as you and me.
Our roles may not be as historically significant as the ones listed above, but each of us has a part to play. It may be that of a loving and caring husband who leads his family to love and serve the Lord. Your role may be that of a wife or mother who nurtures and holds the family together while fulfilling ten other roles, all without complaining. If one is fortunate enough, as children we get to take on the role of caregiver for our parents. This is often not easy, but it will pay some of the greatest rewards (rewards that remain for life) of any role we play in life.
There is a song that says one can count the seeds in an apple, but no one can count the apples in a seed. There is no way to measure the good that can come from teaching your child to love and serve the Lord. You cannot calculate the good that can come from taking a child under your wing and being a mentor. It may be a young person at church, in your community, on your child’s ball team, or at work, or wherever. Doing good is often rewarded with more good being done.
O Lord God, help me be like Jesus and “go about doing good” every day. Remind me that the little things like “just a cup of cold water in your name” does not go unnoticed. Fill me with your love so that every word that comes out of my mouth is helpful and said in kindness. Open my eyes to see the opportunities to help others, both physically and spiritually. Give me a pure heart and a giving heart so I will share what you have given me with those in need. Thank you for all who have sacrificed and given so much for me in my life. I pray in the name of Jesus.
