Daily Devotional: Psalms 20:1-5

Ps 20:1-5

May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion! May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans! May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners! May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!

Rom 8:26-28

Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

The same God who protected David in all his trials and afflictions is with us today and is protecting us. The God of Israel watched over his people and gave them victory on every side, when they trusted in him and in his might, and he is the same God who watches over his people today. Spiritual Israel are those who have the faith of Abraham and who trust him as David trusted him; those who have their sins forgiven by the blood of Jesus. He is with us and will not leave us!

I could not help but notice that every sentence in the quote from the Psalm above ends with an exclamation point! It is though the Psalmist is shouting the greatness of God as he prays for his constant help, not only for himself but for the people of God also. We need to shout the goodness of God in our lives! We need to shout his greatness and his constant protection!

God has a purpose for each of us. It may not be that he plans our profession or what we will accomplish in it, but he has a much greater plan for us. His plan is that when this life is over for us, we will go and live with him in eternity! His plan for us is that we will accept the forgiveness of sins that is available through the blood of Jesus so we can live forever! We are called according to his purpose!

O Lord God, majestic above all gods, holy is your name in all the earth! As I ponder your greatness, your power, your wisdom, and your majesty, I tremble with fear as I see my own unworthiness to come before you. I know that I fail you too often, even in ways that I do not know, so I need your constant forgiveness. Use me to magnify and honor your name in all I do. Having been cleansed by the blood of Jesus, he gives me permission to come to you in his name, as your beloved Son, so I come before you with boldness in him and in his name.
