Daily Devotional: Psalms 86:8-13

Ps 86:8-13

8 Among the gods there is none like you, O Lord; no deeds can compare with yours. 9 All the nations you have made will come and worship before you, O Lord; they will bring glory to your name. 10 For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God. 11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. 12 I will praise you, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify your name forever. 13 For great is your love toward me; you have delivered me from the depths of the grave.

2 Thess 2:16-17

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.

Never has there been a time when God’s people need to be determined to serve the Lord with an undivided heart and fear his name more than today. The only answer to the turmoil in our society at large, in our churches and in our homes is to recognize Jesus as our only Lord and to have his undivided heart of loyalty to the Father. He said he came to earth to do the will of God. He prayed that God’s will would be done on earth, even as it is done in heaven. This only happens when each of us commits our lives to him and follows his word. It is in doing this that we bring glory to his name and lead others to him. He alone is still God.

How do we know the will of God? There are many who set out to do their own will and then claim it to be the will of God because it seems to work for them. The fact is that the only way we can know the will of God is to learn his truth. His truth is always the same and is absolute. In a world that extols relativism, we need the anchor of truth for our souls and that is only found in the word of God, the Bible.

To know the truth, we must not approach his word to prove what we want to believe but we must have open hearts and minds to accept his will. As we study his word we also pray for wisdom. We put aside our former prejudices and preconceptions and allow his will to prevail in our thinking and understanding. Learning his truth is a challenge but it is most rewarding as we accept it.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your love, your mercy and your grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Give me an undivided heart to know your will and to put it into practice in my life. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. Open my eyes to see where I am wrong and when I fail and give me wisdom and strength to change what is wrong; both in belief and in practice. Lord, I want to love others as you love me so I will be as merciful to those around me as you are merciful to me. Keep me from judging and fill my heart with compassion. Be with those who are sick and who are hurting. Use me to help and encourage them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
