Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:49-56
Ps 119:49-56 Zayin
49 Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me hope. 50 My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. 51 The arrogant mock me without restraint, but I do not turn from your law. 52 I remember your ancient laws, O LORD, and I find comfort in them. 53 Indignation grips me because of the wicked, who have forsaken your law. 54 Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge. 55 In the night I remember your name, O LORD, and I will keep your law. 56 This has been my practice: I obey your precepts.
Heb 3:4-6
5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.
If we are really honest with ourselves and we really understand the nature of God and his justice, it is easy to become discouraged in our walk with him. We have all sinned and we all have failed to be what he wants us to be. As Paul puts it, we have fallen short of the glory of God. He later discusses that he saw in himself this same struggle because he did not always do what he knew was right but in spite of knowing, he did wrong. What wretched people we are.
But thanks be to God who has saved us by his grace in Jesus Christ! Our hope is in the love of God, his mercy and his forgiveness. This is made possible because he is both just and the justifier through the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf. God made him who knew no sin to become sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. This is the gospel of which Paul said he was not ashamed but rather gave him hope and propelled him to share it with both Jews and with Greeks so that they too might have salvation in Jesus Christ.
It is wonderful indeed to have hope of salvation. Not from our own doing but by what God has done for us. This grace is offered to all who will come to him in faith and in obedience to his gospel. As the children of God, we are the only thing in heaven or earth that can separate us from his love and his salvation.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your great love for me. I thank you for forgiving me of my sin and ask you to help me become more like you in every way. Open my heart to your Spirit who lives in me so he will be able to mold me into your image. Give me the heart of David who sought to always do your will and who acknowledged his sin when he failed. Keep me from being proud. Impress me with your power and your majesty as I look upon your creation. Use me to help those around me and not be selfish. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
