Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:7-15

Ps 50:7-15

7 "Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you: I am God, your God. 8 I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

Matt 6:25-27

25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Every one of us wants to feel needed. It adds to our feelings of self esteem to think others depend on us and that maybe, we are indispensable. While none of us is truly indispensable (we all die, and the world keeps on going), others do depend on us in more ways than we usually know. Another part of this is that we associate being needed with being loved. These two do not always correspond in direct proportion. We can be one without the other being true.

God does not need us. He does not need me, and he does not need you. We have nothing to offer him that he cannot do without and still be just as much God as if we never existed. Since he is both designer and creator of all things, we have nothing of a material or intellectual nature to offer him that is not his already.

But God does love us. God knows each of us and wants what is best for us. So, the one thing we can give God is our love, our trust and our service. We can live in a way that glorifies him and honors his name as the only God of the universe.

Lord God, I do love you and I want to be yours in every way.  All to often I do and say things that I should not do or say. I also keep silent when I should speak and stand for you and your truth. Please forgive me and empower me to be more like you and to overcome my weakness. The more I realize your greatness and your glory, the more I see just how weak I am and how much I fall short of being just like you. Lord, so many are suffering in so many ways and I ask your blessings on each one as you see best. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
