Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:7-12
Ps. 90:7-12
7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. 8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 The length of our days is seventy years--or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Eph. 5:15-18
15 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.
The wisest of men said that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord and that true knowledge comes only from God. There is nothing that can guide our lives here on earth better than respect for the authority of God and obedience to his word. After all, he designed us and made both us and the environment in which we live. As we follow his word, we avoid the pitfalls of sin and the terrible consequences it yields, both now and in eternity. Wisdom looks to the future and tells us to forgo the momentary pleasures that lead us from God and into sin.
Some think that living a life for God is boring and never allows us to have fun. The truth is that serving God gives us peace of mind because we don’t have to live with a guilty conscience. It brings about peace between us and others around us because it is based on love instead of selfishness. Serving God means we freely give of ourselves to others, and nothing brings us greater joy and fulfilment than sharing, helping and giving. Jesus said it is more blessed to give than receive.
Since this kind of thinking goes contrary to that of the world, we will face trials, hardships and be mistreated at times because we put God first. Add to this the fact that Satan does not want us to serve God, so he will do all he can to make it difficult for us. By the power of the Spirit we can reach heaven our home.
Heavenly Father, I read about you and your greatness and realize just how small and weak I am on my own. There is no way I deserve to be recognized as your child or to be able to approach you and talk to you. Thank you for loving me, for your tender mercy and indescribable grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Give me wisdom to use my time here on earth in a way that pleases you and brings glory to your name. Take away my selfish desires so I will be willing to share all I am and all I have to help others. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
