Daily Devotional: Psalms 102:9-15
Ps. 102:9-15
9 For I eat ashes as my food and mingle my drink with tears 10 because of your great wrath, for you have taken me up and thrown me aside. 11 My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass. 12 But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. 13 You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come. 14 For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust moves them to pity. 15 The nations will fear the name of the LORD; all the kings of the earth will revere your glory.
James 1:5-8
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
When we face trials in life, we are to pray for wisdom. James later tells us that the wisdom from above is peaceable, gentle, reasonable and full of good deeds. In the midst of our problems and turmoil, God provides peace. When we are angry with the world, God will give us the ability to be gentle and reasonable. The other side of this is our own wisdom that is filled with envy, anger and malice which leads to more problems, turmoil and strife in our lives. God’s way or ours?
In the short time we live on earth we may not see a bigger picture of God’s plan as it is being carried out. When the time is right, God will act and will do so very decisively. The greatest nation and the most powerful rulers are subject to God and will one day confess Jesus as Lord. Pride goes before destruction.
But God’s sovereignty is not just for the nations. His majesty is to be recognized in our homes and in our personal lives. Jesus is Lord of lords and is King of kings so we (you and I) must submit to his rule. It is our duty but also our privilege to be able to study his word and learn how to be more like him. His Spirit guides us with his wisdom and molds us into his image as we submit to Jesus our Savior.
Lord God, creator and giver of life, I thank you for the work of Jesus on my behalf so my sins are forgiven and I can be your child. Thank you for the opportunity you give me to be able to serve you as I serve those around me. Fill me with your love and your compassion so I will show mercy and forgiveness to others. Take away my selfish desires and help me keep my mind set on you and becoming more like you. Be with the leaders of our nation so that we can have peace – as a nation and with other nations also. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
