Daily Devotional: Psalms 40:1-5

Ps 40:1-5

1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. 2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. 5 Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.

1 Thess 5:16-24

16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. 22 Avoid every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.

There is an old hymn which says we should count our blessings and name them one by one. While some, being ignorant of poetic license in songs have objected to singing this hymn, I believe it is good for us to name what God has done for us and in our lives. As the Psalmist says, we will never be able to name them all because we don’t even know all he has done for us and if we did, it would be too great to number! God is so good to us. Most of us are blessed abundantly.

I am reminded of how as parents we do so much for our children to provide for them and to make sure their lives are headed on the right track. We sacrifice our time, money and energy without any regret for doing so. How much more the infinite God has done for us and continues to do every day. From the very air we breath to our jobs, our abilities, our friends, not to mention how it was God who selected the time in history, the place in the world and the parents to whom we were born. What a wonderful and awesome God we serve. Praise His Name!

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your many blessings that are indeed too great to number or list. As I consider my body I am made to rejoice for my health and my strength. While I have my aches and pains, I am blessed to be as healthy as I am and I thank you for this. Thank you for the ability to think, to reason and to remember. Thank you for my eyes that see the beauty all around me and my ears that hear the songs of people, animals and all of nature. Thank you for your Son who died for my sin to give me eternal life. I pray in his holy name.
