Daily Devotional: Psalms 29:1-11
Ps 29:1-11
1 Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters, the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars, the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!" 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
Having lived most of my life in what is called “tornado country” and very close to “tornado alley” this Psalms really rings clear in my mind. I have seen mighty oaks that were twisted and the forest stripped bare. I have witnessed a pine needle stuck in the side of an oak tree and houses with only one wall standing or even with nothing but a concrete slab left behind. Cars are tossed as toys.
The only time of my life that I did not live in this area, I was in Florida where we faced hurricanes on an annual basis. The mighty wind of these storms is beyond the ability of most to really comprehend. I have seen areas that were left with only a few structures standing and everything was flooded. In all of our wisdom, mankind cannot build anything that God cannot destroy.
With each crashing wave or with each funnel storm, God is crying to all of us that he alone is God and there is not a person alive who can compete with him or stop him. The waves of the ocean cry “glory” each time they come to shore. Each bolt of lightning and the rolling thunder shouts that he is majestic above all else.
We are at his mercy in every part of our lives and none is more true than our spiritual wellbeing and eternal destiny. The same mercy that stops the waves at the shoreline is what sent Jesus to die for our sins so we can have eternal life.
O Lord what a blessing to know that you love me and that your mercy has been shown to me in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Thank you for making your will known to all mankind so we can have faith in Jesus as our Savior and in you as God. Help me to have a heart that is steadfast in seeking you and a life that honors you in all I do and all I say. Forgive me when I fail because I know that at my best, I do fail at times. Help me be more devoted to studying your word and give me wisdom to understand it and to live it. I pray in Jesus name.
