Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:9-13

Ps 31:9-13

9 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and my body with grief. 10 My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. 11 Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors; I am a dread to my friends--those who see me on the street flee from me. 12 I am forgotten by them as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. 13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror on every side; they conspire against me and plot to take my life.

Acts 4:32-33

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.

We all face trials, problems, sorrow, sickness and death. These things come on both the good and the bad. People who love others face these things and more, just as do the people who are hateful and filled with malice. Life is not fair and often we do not understand why things happen to us as they do. So, why do we bother to serve the Lord? Why do we even try to live for him?

Why is there so much evil? Why are so many wicked? Why does social injustice prevail on so many fronts? The answer to all of this and the source is Satan. He is the prince of this world of darkness and he has many who follow him and his deception. Evil is called good and good is called evil as so many serve the gods of this world. Thus, the world is filled with greed and hatred and lust for sin.

The ultimate answer to this and many other questions in life for the child of God is the resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord. Because he lives, we have reason to live for him today and every day. Because he lives, we live in peace and with hope. Because he lives, we live above this world and all of the strife and injustice. We are ever pressing on to higher ground, living above the sin and evil of this age.

Heavenly Father I am so glad that you love me and for the life you have given to me. What a blessing it is to awake each day with the assurance that you will be with me and guide me. What a joy to be able to go to bed at night knowing you have forgiven me and that I am counted righteous in Jesus my Savior. Thank you for his resurrection that gives me the hope of eternal life in a land that has no sin and no sorrow, no suffering or pain. Thank you for the success of my surgery and the healing you are giving to me. There are others who are sick and suffering and I ask you to be with them and give them healing. I pray in the name of Jesus.
