Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:9-16

Ps 119:9-16              Beth

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.

Titus 2:11-14

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope-the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

When I was growing up, it was very common for us to memorize Bible verses and to recite them aloud. As I attended a Christian school, it was almost daily that we had a memory verse and then every Sunday, we had more to memorize. The value of this can never be underestimated because much of what we learn in our early years, stays with us forever. There is no better foundation for young people than verses of scripture. With this we can live lives that are pure and godly.

Just to memorize Bible verses is good but the real value in life comes when we begin to learn what they mean, and how we are to apply them in our lives. These become the main weapon we use to fight against temptation and sin. It was with memorized Scripture that Jesus responded when he was tempted and he said: “it is written…”. So, to be like Jesus, we need to memorize Bible verses.

As parents and grandparents, we need to be reading the Bible to our young ones and help them memorize verses appropriate for their age. There are several songs for children that are verses set to music, which makes the task easier. But along with this, we need to be teaching them what they mean and how to live them.

Heavenly Father, it is such a joy to be able to use your word to guide my life and to know that it is a solid foundation. Help me show my wisdom by building my house on the solid rock by hearing and obeying your word. Help me always look to Jesus as my example as I seek to follow your will. Lord, there are so many who are hurting and who are sick or taking treatments. My heart is heavy for them, so I ask you blessings, your healing, your peace, and your love on them. Strengthen their faith as they look to you for solace. I pray in the holy name of Jesus.
