Daily Devotional: Psalm 102:12-17

Psalm 102:12-17

12 But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations. 13 You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her; the appointed time has come. 14 For her stones are dear to your servants; her very dust moves them to pity. 15 The nations will fear the name of the LORD, all the kings of the earth will revere your glory. 16 For the LORD will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory. 17 He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.

For one of us to try to describe God in terms that can be understood is a futile effort. This would be like a small child trying to explain to another child all the complications and emotions of being an adult. God in all his being and all his ways is so far above us, our thinking and our ability to understand that we cannot begin to fathom our God. Yet, with all this, he is a God of love, filled with mercy and compassion. He deeply cares about each one of us as individuals and the personal plight each of us faces.

In addition to this, God is all wise and all knowing. This means he knows what we face in life, why we are facing it and what needs to be done about it. Since he is a God of unlimited power and resources, he can do what needs to be done for us, no matter how big or out of control it seems to us. The God who designed our bodies and then gave them life can certainly heal our diseases. Since he is the God of all comfort and he gave us our emotions, he can give us control over our pain, our disappointments and our grief.

His infinite wisdom knows that timing is often more important than what is done for us and he knows the perfect timing for our needs. How much suffering do we need to face to mature but not be broken? We can’t answer that for ourselves or others but God knows exactly how much every time. How much wealth can we handle without becoming proud and forgetting it is God who gave it to us? We may not know the answer but God knows to the penny. But we are not robots and he is not going to control us against our will. We must be willing to submit to him in faith and let him have control.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for your infinite wisdom, your unfailing love and your constant compassion shown to me in my life. I have failed to be what you want me to be so many times and yet you never give up on me and you continue to forgive me. Never let me forget that all I have and all I am is because of what you have given me. Help me use it to your glory on a daily basis. Give me a heart of compassion so I will help those around me and thus honor your name. Thank you for all those who have helped me so much. I pray in the name of Jesus.
