Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:1-7
Psalms 109:1-7
1 O God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, 2 for wicked and deceitful men have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. 3 With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. 4 In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. 5 They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship. 6 Appoint an evil man to oppose him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. 7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him.
Most of us have times in our lives when we feel that whole world has crashed in around us and there are those who seek to destroy us. The more active we are in our work for the Lord and the more vocal we are about our convictions, the more likely this is to happen. How are we to handle this? How do we deal with people in our lives that we know are hoping to see us fail or who are actively seeking to destroy our reputation and effectiveness as a Christian?
We can do as the Psalmist and turn to God in prayer. We can know that we have an advocate in Jesus as he speaks on our behalf. He has faced all we will possibly face in this life and then a lot more. He was physically abused, not because he had done anything wrong but for sake. He was emotionally maligned many times and yet he never retaliated in a rage. He faced all we face, without sin and then gave his physical life here on earth so we can live with him in eternity.
He now sits at the right hand of the throne of God and with a compassionate and understanding heart, makes intercession for us. He offers his Spirit to help us and to strengthen and sustain us in our trials and hardships. He always knows just how much we can handle and has promised to never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear. But even greater than this is knowing that with every temptation, he provides the way of escape.
So we can face the world and all that the devil has to throw at us, knowing that we are armed with the power of God as his Spirit controls our lives. We also can have the assurance that Jesus is our constant companion and friend. So, by faith, we already have the victory in Jesus and the promise of heaven.
Thank you God for your love for me; a love that is so far beyond my ability to understand, yet is so real I can feel your presence in my life. When I face trials and hardships, help me never take my eyes off of Jesus and the things above. Help me abhor that which is deceitful and sinful and love that which is good and right. Give me strength to live for you and a willingness to be molded by your Spirit so I can have your fellowship and I can lead others to you. Use me to help those who are faced with trials and problems today. I pray in the name of Jesus.
