Daily Devotional: Psalms 116:1-6
Psalms 116:1-6
1 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. 2 Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. 4 Then I called on the name of the LORD: “O LORD, save me!” 5 The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. 6 The LORD protects the simple hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.
We all have heard jokes about someone who was in the face of death and made a promise to God conditioned on getting well only to make excuses for not keeping the promise when they did in fact regain their health. Have you or a loved one ever actually faced the moment in time with the realization that your life is in the balance and you may not live through the night? This is an eye opener and really does make us think about what is serious and what does not matter.
There are times and situations in life when we know without a doubt that we do not have any control of what is going to happen to us. If you have ever been in a car wreck and you saw it coming but could not prevent it, you understand exactly what this means. The other vehicle is coming toward your path and no matter what you do it is going to hit you and then it happens – there was nothing you could have done to stop it!
We all face problems in life. Some are more serious than others but we all have them. There are some people who put on a front or at least appear to others as though they live a fairy tale life and nothing ever goes wrong. This just simply is not true. Some have much bigger problems than others but we all have them, and eventually we all have the big ones that we can do nothing about.
God is in control. He rules the nations and he places the governments in power according to his will. He sees and knows each of his children and he is the only one who can ultimately control what happens in our lives as families, individuals and as churches. While we make many choices that have consequences, he is the only one who can override the results. When we submit to him and his will, he can and will lead us toward him and give us peace in the storms of life.
Heavenly Father, thank you for your love, your compassion and your grace. I give you praise because you are in control of all things. Give me greater faith to submit to your will in every facet of my life and please continue to forgive me when I fail to be what you want me to be. Give me peace in the time of storms and rest when I am weary. Help me forget myself and be used by you to help others as they seek to live for you. Help me turn loose of my own desires so that your will can be my own. I thank you and praise you in the name of Jesus.
