Daily Devotional: Psalms 125:1-5
Psalms 125:1-5
1 Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. 2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore. 3 The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil. 4 Do good, O LORD, to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart. 5 But those who turn to crooked ways the LORD will banish with the evildoers. Peace be upon Israel.
We can always trust God. We think of the mountains being secure, the caves form a natural hiding place and the great chasms provide a divide that give safety. Yet, none of these are nearly as safe and secure as the arms of our Lord. The earth can move and the mountains can be shaken and crumble but the love of God will never change and his word is ever true. What God has promised can be taken as having been done, even if he has not carried it to completion. We can thank him for his deliverance, even before the struggle begins.
We tend to judge God on the basis of our weaknesses and none of these apply to him. We promise what we cannot fulfill, even though we make them with good intentions. We offer help to others but then find we either forget or are unable to carry through. We are limited in more ways than we want to admit. We face obstacles we cannot overcome. God is not limited by anything – read that again – God is not limited by anything. What he says is done. What he promises is carried out. What he desires is accomplished.
God knows you and me. He understands every problem we face and sees every victory we attain. After all, he gave us the victory or allowed the problem in the first place. But he gives each of these for our good, to help us grow closer to him, to make our faith stronger and to prepare us for his work. He uses the worst thing that ever happens to us for our good. He never allows more than we can handle when we allow the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us. It is God who works in us to will and to do his good purpose.
O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for the victory in Jesus. When I have tried to overcome sin in my life on my own I fail. When I accept your forgiveness and your empowerment I win the battle every time. Give me the humility to give up myself and allow your Spirit to fill my heart and my life. Help me never forget that I need you every hour of every day. Make heaven so real in my mind that I cannot help but stay focused on you and the glory of being in your presence. Use me to help others live for you. Give me wisdom to only say that which will build up and never tear down. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and my Lord.
