Daily Devotional: Psalms 132:9-18

Ps 132:9-18

9 May your priests be clothed with righteousness; may your saints sing for joy.” 10 For the sake of David your servant, do not reject your anointed one. 11 The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath that he will not revoke: “one of your own descendants I will place on your throne--12 if your sons keep my covenant and the statutes I teach them, then their sons will sit on your throne for ever and ever.” 13 For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling: 14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it--15 I will bless her with abundant provisions; her poor will I satisfy with food. 16 I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her saints will ever sing for joy.” 17 “Here I will make a horn grow for David and set up a lamp for my anointed one. 18 I will clothe his enemies with shame, but the crown on his head will be resplendent.”

David gave his all for God. He lived for him while he was a shepherd boy in the fields, as a soldier in the army of King Saul, as a personal assistant to the king and then as the king over Israel. He trusted God to kill the bear and the lion when they tried to take his sheep. He trusted God to kill the giant when he threatened the armies of Israel. He trusted God to defend him from the insane and evil tirades of Saul when he sought his life and hunted him as an animal. He always trusted God to win the battles for his people when he went to war as king.

God was not just about “church” (or in his case tabernacle) and the time he went to publicly worship. God was the dominant force in all of David’s thinking and his actions in his everyday life. From what we read in Proverbs, we see that he taught his son Solomon about serving God, so we know he served God in his house as a father. God was ever present and controlled all he was and did.

God is to be our all today. He is the deciding factor in our behavior. His will guides us in all our decisions. His word furnishes us to all good works. What we need to know and do is given us to follow. Jesus came to give us an example of how to live and follow the will of God in all things. This boils down to trusting God and then obeying his word. Living so that he is glorified in all we are and do.

O God, give me a greater sense of commitment to you and to your word. Help me put you first in all I am and all I do. Give me faith to keep my eyes focused on you, your Son and the things above. Give me courage to admit when I am wrong, to be willing to turn from it and to continually ask for your forgiveness in my life. Help me never forget that all the glory is to be yours and that I am only a servant seeking to do your will. Give healing to those who are sick as it accords with your will and give us faith to accept your will in all things. In Jesus name I pray.
