Daily Devotional: Psalms 146:1-6

Ps 146:1-6

1 Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. 2 I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. 3 Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. 4 When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, 6 the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them--the LORD, who remains faithful forever.

All that we know and call nature began in the mind of God. All of the amazing and complex interactions that go on every day without our notice and much without our knowledge does so because of the wisdom of God. Almost every year we read where scientist discover something that had never been found before or the workings of it were never understood. The human body is still being studied with vigor and after all these years, new discoveries are happening. The most intelligent people know only “a drop in the bucket” of all there is to know and all of this to be learned is from the mind of God.

How can God who is so great, so powerful, so wise and so majestically above all of his creation care about us? How can he even notice that you and I exist? Because God is love. All he asks of us is that we trust him and live for him. While absolute perfection is required by him, he knows we will fail so he has made a way for the removal of our sins and for us to be counted as totally righteous before him. This is the love of God for us. When we obey his gospel and live for him, he will take care of us and cause everything that happens to us to be worked for our good and according to his purpose. That is our God!

So we praise the Lord with all our being. We praise him in our worship services but we also praise him as we drive down the road. We praise him when we see the flowers, the changing of the colors of the trees or the mighty waves of the oceans. We praise him when the storms come and when the rainbow reminds us of his promise of the survival of his creation. But most of all we praise him for giving his Son to die for our sins so we can be his now and in eternity.

O God, I praise you and thank you for your matchless love. I thank you for your wisdom that makes all things work in our universe and in my life. Thank you for sustaining your creation and providing all my needs. Give me a heart of peace and contentment. As I am being reminded on every hand during this Christmas season of the birth of your Son, give me a renewed spirit of service and dedication to you and to your will. I know I sin and need your forgiveness but help me be molded by every experience so I will be more like you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
