Daily Devotional: Psalms 147:7-11

Ps 147:7-11

7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp. 8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. 10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; 11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

God is so good to us in so many ways, so many of which we are never aware and never see. As with a small child that is cared for by the parents that is protected, provided with food, clothed, cleaned and so much more is our God who showers us with his love, his care, his protection and abundant provisions. He blesses us in ways that we cannot even imagine. But it is not only his children that receive the rain, the sunshine, the many beauties of creation and necessities of life. He provides all that is needed for life for all of his creation. He created this world and he continues to sustain it with his mighty power.

So many in our world actually worship the physical things of this world. This is not new because we read in Romans of those who worshipped the creation instead of the creator. They did not recognize God as God and did not give him thanks. They found themselves on a downward spiral toward immorality, wickedness and every kind of ungodliness. Without God, they lost all respect for authority of any kind and therefore had no moral guide left to direct their lives. As in the days of Noah when God destroyed the world, when he just gave up on the wicked and let them go their own way to destruction. He will do the same today.

This is one of the many reasons we are to focus on the things above and keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. We are also told to teach our children to respect, love and serve God. Abraham was blessed for many reasons but one is because God knew he would direct his household to faith, service and devotion to the only true God. We must do the same. Also as Abraham who built and alter everywhere he went and worshipped God, we must always be offering praise and worship to God in our words, our songs and our lives.

O God, heavenly Father, I thank you and praise you as God. Keep me from ever allowing my thinking or my understanding to take the place of your revealed word. Give me wisdom to understand your will and strength to carry it out. Give me self-control to put your will ahead of my own and the concerns of others ahead of my own interests. Never let me forget that it is truly more blessed to give than to receive – not just at Christmas but all the time. Give peace to the bereaved, healing to the sick and courage to the weak. In Jesus name I pray.
