Daily Devotional: Psalms 150:1-6

Ps 150:1-6

1 Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

From whom or what does God deserve to be praised? The heavens are his and the earth is his too. All the creatures large and small belong to him because he has made them, each one in its own sphere and for its own purpose. The bodies of the heavens move at his command and each occupies the space and circuit that God has assigned to it. So with precision greater than the mechanical Swiss watch that was known for such accurateness, each part of God’s creation lives, moves and functions as a whole in what we know as our universe.

But as great as is his power and his creation, even greater is his love for those whom he has given life. He jealously desires the spirit his has placed within each of us that we might serve him. But it is not our service that is his greatest desire; rather it is our fellowship that brings him joy. Because of his holiness he cannot have this mutual sharing with those who have sinned against him any more than light and darkness can occupy the same space. Our sin causes us to be antithetical to the very nature of God.

Because of his great love for us, he has made it possible to restore this union and perfect harmony. This is accomplished by the great sacrifice of the Son of God. It is in our place that Jesus went to the cross to suffer for sin that was not his own but the sin of all who have lived on the earth. As sin is punished in his death, so our fellowship with him is made possible. When we come to him in faith, we have our sins washed away in baptism so that we are made pure and white as snow.

This love is not for those who deserve it because none do. Grace is pardon and forgiveness for those who will yield to Jesus as Lord and come to him on his terms to be restored to that perfect fellowship with the Father.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and your grace that makes it possible for me to talk with you and know you will hear me. Thank you for the many things you have done for me and placed in my life. Thank you for others who are serving you and who help and encourage me in my service to you. Thank you for your word and the ability you have given me to read and understand it. Help me live it in every part of my life. Help me rid myself of all bitterness so I will be more kind, considerate and loving to those around me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
