Daily Devotional: Psalms 2:1-6
Ps 2:1-6
1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed one. 3 "Let us break their chains," they say, "and throw off their fetters." 4 The one enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 "I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill."
1 Corinthians 1:18-21
18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate." 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
In every age there are those who think themselves to be wiser than God. Satan told Eve if she would eat the fruit that God had forbidden them to eat, she would not die but would become wise as God. The wisdom she gained by defying God was that God is always true and sin brings death. During the days of Noah, all of mankind thought they could ignore God and all would be well. Then came the attempt to build the tower of Babel and once again the wisdom of God was challenged. Nebuchadnezzar thought he had it all figured out and he was in control until he became as an animal, living in the fields eating grass.
The wisdom of God is seen in the simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is embodied in the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Jesus on our behalf. This may seem foolish to the world but Paul says it allowed God to be both just and the justifier of those who believe in Jesus. The wisdom of God is further seen in the obedience of baptism as we die to sin, are buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life. Such a simple faith is demonstrated in such a simple act.
O God, help me never think I am wiser than you. Help me remember that you are in control, from creation until the end of time. Lord, I want to submit my will to yours in all things so I ask you to help me rid my heart of all pride. When I don’t understand why you say what you say, give me wisdom to accept it by faith. Use me to share your simple gospel with others. Please be with those who are sick, hurting, distressed and faced with various trials. Use me to help them. Thank you for loving me. Perfect your love in me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
