Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:16-19
Ps 18:16-19
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
2 Cor 1:8b-11a
8b We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. 9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11a as you help us by your prayers.
How wonderful it is to know that we can go to bed at night and sleep in complete rest because God is protecting and taking care of us. We can face each new day with the assurance that God is our support and our help. There is nothing and no one whom God cannot defeat. Our God is an awesome God!
We often face things in our lives that we cannot control. We don’t control the circumstances we often face or the accidents that happen to us. Just when we think we can control things, some terrible disease strikes or some financial disaster or some relationship falls apart. God just sees these as minor events and each is under his control as he chooses to use them for our good.
As we keep our hearts and our minds focused on serving him, on being like Jesus and reaching toward the things above, we learn that the things of this life are just temporary and perish with using. The only thing that really matters in the length of our lives, is eternity and how we are prepared to face it. As we yield to our Lord, he will mold us, shape us and fit us to become more like him each day so we will be ready for that new heaven and new earth. Yes, many things are tragic, painful and grievous at the time but when we allow God to lead us, we have the peace beyond comprehension that guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Heavenly Father, you are God – creator of all things and sustainer of life. You have done so much in my life to protect me and to use me in your service. Help me remember that to be great, I must be a servant. Give me wisdom to know your will and strength to live it in my life each day. The more I know you, the more I realize just how frail and weak I am but how much I can depend on you in all things. Often I don’t know what is best so I ask for your guidance. In all my relationships, help me show your love and your kindness. I pray in the name of Jesus.
