Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:7-11
Ps 19:7-11
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. 11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
2 Tim 3:14-17
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
I heard an elderly preacher on the radio bemoaning the fact that too many of the younger preachers were preaching philosophy and “new” ideas instead of just the simple truth from the word of God. While it is true that many have gone after the ways of man instead of God, this is nothing new. Paul constantly warned Timothy, Titus and various churches about this same problem. John wrote of those who would reject the word of God and go after men.
The best way to recognize error is to know the truth. The only way we can know the truth is to study the word of God. To make sure we are following the truth, we must study for ourselves and not follow the teaching of others. This is not to say we should not benefit from the study and writings of men but we must never forget that it is just that; the understanding of men. At the same time, we must remember that our own understanding is fallible and is not the standard. The Word is the only standard of truth. So we study and pray for wisdom so we will grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Lord God of heaven and earth, I thank you for revealing your will in your word. Thank you for the gospel of Jesus, his death, burial and resurrection to provide me with forgiveness so I can be with you in eternity. Give me a greater desire to know you, to know Jesus and to know your will for my life. I need your wisdom to be able to properly understand your word and to apply it. Help me always teach the truth but at the same time to never forget that I am fallible in my understanding. I ask a special blessing on those who are struggling in so many ways. Use me to help them to better trust in you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
