Daily Devotional: Psalms 19:12-14

Ps 19:12-14

12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

1 John 1:6-10

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

As the children of God, our goal in life is to be sinless. That means we are seeking to be like God, to follow the example of Jesus in every way. As Christians, we are disciples of Christ and we therefore seek to imitate him, his life, his attitudes and his desire to always do the will of the Father.

We are all aware that this is a lofty goal and that we will fail at times. (In fact, the more we recognize the holiness of God, the more we realize how far short we fall of being like him.) The good news is that as long as this is our goal and we are striving for that perfection, we confess our weakness and sinfulness and God promises to continue to forgive us.

As a part of that goal, we seek to make the words of our mouths and the thoughts of our hearts pleasing in the sight of God. Our actions begin with our thoughts and our thoughts are controlled by what we put into our minds. So to walk in his light, we must fill our minds with the things of God, things that are right, pure, wholesome and lovely. This means we must be careful of spiritually dining on the things of this world; the ungodly entertainment that fills the radio, television, internet and other forms of media. As a man thinks in his heart; so is he.

O Lord, my God and Father, I thank you for revealing your word. Thank you for giving your Son as a Redeemer and as an example for me. Give me a greater desire to be like him in every way. Today I ask a special blessing on those who are serving you in places where their lives are in danger for doing so. Increase their faith and protect them according to your will. Be with those who are destitute because of drought and famines. Use me to encourage and help as I have the opportunity to do so. I pray in the name of Jesus.
