Daily Devotional: Psalms 29:1-6

Ps 29:1-6

1 Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox.

Col 1:15-20

15 He [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

The story of creation is told for multiple reasons. It does tell us how we got here and how all things began. This gives us purpose and meaning for life. Perhaps a greater reason is to let us know the power of God and that we owe him for our very existence and thus our allegiance.

Charles Spurgeon once said: “There are no infidels anywhere but on earth: there are none in heaven, and there are none in hell. Atheism is a strange thing. Even the devils never fell into that vice, for the devils believe and tremble.”

But it is not just the physical creation over which God rules. He has placed Jesus as head over all things both physical and spiritual. All creation has been subjected to him and all power has been given to him. This has been done to provide us with a means of salvation from sin and the promise of eternal life. Great is our God!

Lord God, I do thank you for your power and for giving me life. Please have mercy on this great nation in which I live and give us leaders who will honor you and respect your word. Help me do my part, one person at a time, to reach those who are lost and show them your way. Give me wisdom to say the right things at the right time. Help me get out of my comfort zone to help others serve you and to be faithful to you. Give peace and greater faith to those who are distressed and are struggling to trust you and to live for you. Thank you for those who have helped me to come to know you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
