Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:19-24
Ps 31:19-24
19 How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues. 21 Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege. 22 In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord.
1 Pet 1:3-5
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
As David found himself besieged by his enemies, he turned to the Lord and found the deliverance he needed. God never forsook him or turned his back on him and it was this history with God that kept him going. Even as a lad he had seen the hand of God deliver him from the bear, the lion and then the giant. From that time in his life, the list had only multiplied. He knew he could trust God.
How much greater is our deliverance from sin and death in Jesus Christ! From the time we rise up from that grave in baptism, we are assured that our sins are forgiven and we are a new person in Jesus Christ (Rom 6:3-4). From this point on in our lives we just add to the list of things God has done for us in Christ. As we grow in our faith, keeping our eyes on the things above we live in the assurance that God is with us and will never forsake us. Our prize is not just a physical victory but the promise of an eternal home. We know we too can trust God.
O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for forgiving me of my sin. As I reflect on my life and all the times I have left your way and rebelled against your will, I am reminded how little I deserve your mercy. Yet I know that because of your great love and compassion you have by grace made me your child. I need your wisdom every day to live for you, to know what to say and do and then your strength to put it into practice in my life. Open my eyes to the opportunities to help others and to lead others to you. Be with those who are serving you in difficult situations and keep them in your care. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
