Daily Devotional: Psalms 32:1-5

Ps 32:1-5
1 Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the man whose sin the LORD does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. 3 When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Selah 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"--and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
1 John 1:8-10
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
There is nothing that will destroy us much quicker than trying to live with guilt of sin in our lives. I knew of a man who went to a counselor because he was having marriage problems. This in turn had produced both physical and emotional problems. After several sessions, he was told that his problem was all that “stuff” he had been taught as a child that kept him feeling guilty and he needed to try to get it out of his mind. His instructions were to just go against all the things he had been taught until it no longer bothered him. While this treatment might work in the short term, it would have dire eternal consequences. Our conscience was given to us by God for a reason; to keep us from sin.
Just as terrible as the guilt and the nagging and knowing wrenching it produces inside, is the joy that comes with confession and turning away from that sin. We can rejoice in complete forgiveness as the children of God.
For many it is a real test of faith to actually accept the forgiveness of God in our lives. But God really did give his Son for you and me – no matter what we have done or how unfaithful we have been. Paul says that through the forgiveness offered by God we can stand before him without any condemnation. It is as though we had never committed a sin in our lives.
O Lord, my Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth. Your majesty is beyond my ability to understand and your wisdom beyond my searching. You have provided eternal life to me, even though I don’t deserve it. Thank you for loving me and forgiving me. Help me use this grace to love you more and in turn to forgive others more readily. Fill me with your Spirit so I can have your wisdom in my life and be molded more like your image each day. Please be with those who are hurting and taking treatments today. I pray in the name of Jesus.
