Daily Devotional: Psalms 33:1-5
Ps 33:1-5
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. 4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. 5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
Phil 3:1
1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.
Much of the Psalms are repetitious. We read of the troubles of the writer, his hatred for all kinds of evil and wickedness, his need for God to deliver him and save him from his enemies and then his praise for God. His praise is often because of his salvation but also because of his goodness, his compassion and his mercy for those who love him. But he also praises God for his power, his majesty and his wisdom. All of this shows a total reliance on God and we can never be reminded too much of our need to do this today.
What a wonderful blessing to serve the God of heaven. Someone recently pointed out in a Bible class that while we once were slaves of sin, lost and dead to God, as his newborn children and as part of his family, we are now royal priests in his service. This allows us to come to him with whatever is on our hearts. This may be the heaviness that only he can bear or it may be with joy inexpressible that only he can understand but he is open to our petitions.
While we can never focus too much on God and Jesus our Savior, we need to be honest with ourselves about our hearts and our lives. Are we really putting God first in all things? Is Jesus really our Lord? Do we honor God in all we say and do or does our speech or our lives betray us? The Lord loves righteousness and justice and we are to become like him in all things.
Heavenly Father, holy and majestic is your name in all the earth! You alone are God and you alone give life. I thank you for my life and my family. I thank you for the abundant material things you have given me. Thank you for the many friends and fellow Christians you have put in my life. I can’t name all of the blessings you have showered on me, but the greatest is Jesus who saved me. Thank you for your constant love, mercy, compassion and your grace that saves me and keeps me in your care. Give me faith to become like you. Lord, today I ask a special blessing on our nation and on the upcoming elections. Give us leaders who have respect for you and will listen to you and your will. Be merciful to us as a nation and turn us toward you. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
