Daily Devotional: Psalms 42:5-8
Ps 42:5-8
5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and 6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me--a prayer to the God of my life.
Rom 15:13
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When we think of David, the king of Israel, the Psalmist with his wonderful songs of praise and reliance on God and the young lad who slew the enemy giant, we seldom think of him getting down and out. Yet, he did. David was human like each of us and he had the same ups and downs in his life. When he was running and hiding in the caves to escape the wrath of King Saul, he had times that he just wanted to give up and quit. Where was God? Why was all this coming on him when he was doing all he could to be faithful?
But these were moments, not his life. He would always come back to the same theme; that God is faithful and God will deliver. God was his rock, his refuge, his water in the drought and his oasis in the desert. There was no enemy that could defeat him as long as he trusted in God. He was living to bring glory to God and he knew God would keep his word and his promises. God is faithful.
We have the same assurance in our lives today. We may face all kinds of things in our lives but with God on our side we can overcome them all. Not only can we overcome but we can live with the joy and peace of God in our hearts because we have the hope afforded by the power of the Holy Spirit. As Paul said on another occasion; we can do all things through Jesus Christ who gives us strength. He is our rock, our refuge, our water in the time of drought and our oasis in the midst of the desert. Our God is faithful and directs us with his love and his song.
O God of my life, you are faithful and true and give me hope and strength in times of trials and trouble. You give me joy and peace in the midst of the storms of life. I thank you for your wonderful care and the hope you give. Help me never forget that you give me all things and to be thankful to you when things are going good for me. Give me wisdom to know what to say and when to say it and when to keep my mouth closed. Use me to help others serve you. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
