Daily Devotional: Psalms 45:6-9
Ps 45:6-9
6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. 8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad. 9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.
Heb 1:7-9
7 In speaking of the angels he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire." 8 But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy."
It is no question that David was the king of Israel that became the standard by which all others kings were measured. This is because David was declared by God to be a man after his own heart. His primary goal as a king and in his personal life was to bring glory to God. This does not mean that David never sinned because he did – some awful sins (as we measure sin in our minds). It means that when he realized he had sinned, he would admit it and then repent from the heart.
He knew that being fair to his subjects brought glory to God and so he tried to do this in the land. He looked out for those who needed his help. He kept his word and tried to be honest in his dealings. He always gave God the praise for what he accomplished as the king, the commander-in-chief and in his own life.
These verses are applied in Hebrews to Jesus as our king today. He is our leader and our ruler. He leads his army forth to fight against evil and we are his soldiers. All that Jesus did was designed to bring glory to God as he lived on the earth. He is our standard and the one by which we will be measured. He was sinless – without sin at any time. So we do well to have a heart like David and seek the will of God as first in all we do and say. Admit when we sin and repent of it.
Lord God, giver of life and all that is in our universe, I thank you for your Son who not only lived sinless here on earth but gave that perfect life as a sacrifice so that my sin could be forgiven. Give me a pure heart and keep me from sin. Open my eyes to see your way of escape along with wisdom and strength to take it. Use me to help others as they serve you. Help me love and give of myself and what you have given me to show your glory. Be with our nation and our leaders and guide the upcoming elections to bring forth your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
