Daily Devotional: Psalms 48:8-14
Ps 48:8-14
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD Almighty, in the city of our God: God makes her secure forever. Selah 9 Within your temple, O God, we meditate on your unfailing love. 10 Like your name, O God, your praise reaches to the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with righteousness. 11 Mount Zion rejoices, the villages of Judah are glad because of your judgments. 12 Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, 13 consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation. 14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end.
1 Tim 2:5-7
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men-the testimony given in its proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle-I am telling the truth, I am not lying-and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
We must never take lightly the name of God or that of his Son, Jesus Christ. The first of the Ten Commandments given to Israel were all based on the holiness and majesty of God and his name. There were to be no other gods before him, no idols or images were to be made and his name was to be regarded as holy at all times. This was probably easier for them to understand than for us today because they had seen the smoke from the mountain, had felt the quake of the ground and had heard the voice of God as thunder. When Moses came down from being with God, his face shone so brightly that they could not stand to look at him so he covered himself with a veil. God is great and his name is holy!
Today in our speech we must not take the name of God in vain. But this is not just in what we say, it is shown in the way we live. When we fail to follow his will, we are showing that we do not really regard him as holy. It is a contradiction for us to use the name of God flippantly and then go to him in prayer. The more we realize the holiness and greatness of God, the more we will want to be like him.
O Lord my God, holy and majestic is your name in all the earth. There is no one like you in any way. I praise you for your wisdom in providing a way of salvation and freedom from sin in Jesus, your Son and my savior. Thank you for your love shown to me in more ways than I can possibly know. Fill me with your Spirit so I can be molded to be more like you today, to know how to love and forgive as you love and forgive me. Lord, I am mindful of some who are really trying to live for you but are faced with such great trials. Please strengthen them, give them your peace and use me to encourage them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
