Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:7-15

Ps 50:7-15

7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, and I will testify against you: I am God, your God. 8 I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or your burnt offerings, which are ever before me. 9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, 10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. 12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. 13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? 14 Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

Acts 17:24-25

24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.”

When Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem in what we call the “Triumphal Entry” and the crowd was hailing him as the Messiah, the religious leaders told him to stop the crowd from praising him as the Son of David. He told them that even if he did stop them the stones would cry out in praise to him. Jesus was and is the Messiah, the promised Son of David and the Son of God. No matter who denied these things then or denies them now, it does not change who he is.

God does not need us to acknowledge him or praise him to make him God. Our worship does not make him any more majestic or glorious than he is by his own nature. Our recognition of his power does not give him any more power. We have nothing to offer God that he needs so he can be truly God.

But he does desire our worship when it is a heartfelt outpouring of trust based on our love for him and respect of his being. He is God, the creator of all things and we owe him our very being. He wants to bless us but will not and cannot unless we recognize him as God and live for him, according to his will.

Lord God, ruler of heaven and earth, I praise you in my humble and feeble way and ask you to continue to forgive me as I seek to walk in your light. Give me wisdom to know how to understand your word, to live it in my daily life and to be able to teach it to help others serve you too. Help me recognize how much you have blessed me in more ways than I can count or even know. Open my heart to use the opportunities you give me to help others as they seek to know you and to serve you. I ask your blessings on those who face severe trials today. Give them your peace and strength. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
