Daily Devotional: Psalms 59:6-10
Ps 59:6-10
6 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. 7 See what they spew from their mouths--they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?" 8 But you, O LORD, laugh at them; you scoff at all those nations. 9 O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, 10 my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
2 Peter 3:3-7
3 First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.
We live in a world filled with people who ignore God, deny his existence and scoff at his word. Paul says these are without excuse because God has shown them his proof by all of creation. Any reasonable person who examines the evidence will come to the conclusion that there is an intelligent designer behind the universe and that it could not have happened by chance.
But ignoring or denying God does not change reality. He is still God and his word (both promises and warnings) are sure. When God speaks, it is always true and comes to pass accordingly. There is going to be a day of reckoning as every person faces God and gives account of their lives. Jesus explains that there are only two classes of people; those who are saved and live eternally and those who are lost and sent to hell, a place prepared by God for the devil and his angels.
As a part of the saved, the children of God, we can live with assurance of both our eternal salvation and also that God is with us each day of our lives here on earth, protecting us and supplying our needs. So let us live for him, showing his love to those around us and sharing his gospel with the lost.
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me. I stand in awe as I read of your mighty power shown in creation. Your wisdom is so far beyond that of mankind it is hard for me to grasp the reality of it. Yet, in all your power and wisdom you show your love for me in allowing me to be forgiven of my sin through Jesus your Son and his sacrifice on the cross. Thank you for raising him from the grave and giving me the assurance of my own resurrection to eternal life. Help me let this assurance and love motivate me to greater service for you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
