Daily Devotional: Psalms 74:10-17
Ps 74:10-17
10 How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever? 11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them! 12 But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth. 13 It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. 14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert. 15 It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers. 16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. 17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
Luke 9:51-56
51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, 56 and they went to another village.
There are some things we can study and the more we learn, the more we begin to realize how little we know and how much we will never know. The subject and study of God is one of these. We may know him by having a relationship with him through Jesus but we will never understand his greatness, his majesty, his wisdom or his mind. After all, he created from nothing, each of us and all that exists and he did this by speaking it all into existence.
He knew our need for salvation from sin and death even before the world began and had a plan already devised when Adam was made. His love for us is beyond anything we can comprehend because we tend to be selfish and proud and these have no part in the nature of God. God is a consuming fire. He is a jealous God. He is full of mercy and compassion. He wants all to be saved. God is love.
O Lord, God of heaven and earth, I thank you for making yourself known to me in your word. Thank you for showing me your nature in the man Jesus who lived and died for me. I am so thankful to be your child and to be able to call you my father; knowing you love me and care about my every need. Instill in me a greater love for you and for those around me. Give me a greater desire to know your word and to know you. Give me wisdom to understand what I study and strength to apply it in my life. Fill me with your compassion. I pray in the name of Jesus.
