Daily Devotional: Psalms 82:1-8
Ps 82:1-8
1 God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the “gods”:
2 “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Selah 3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. 4 Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. 5 “They know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 “I said, 'You are "gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.' 7 But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler.” 8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.
Rom 13:1-3
1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.
It is so easy for us to get overly concerned and worried about the things of this world and especially the government under which we live. When we see laws enacted that we feel are wrong or politicians that are corrupt or other things, we get upset and worried. While we should be stirred up with a righteous anger when we are faced with sin, we must remember that God is in control. We often do not understand how God could let things happen as they do but we must rest in the assurance that he knows best and his plan will prevail.
What we as individuals can do is pray. We can pray for our country as a whole. We can pray for each person in office at all levels of government and especially for the ones that we dislike or disagree with the most. (Not praying for our will but that God will use them for his will and that our attitude will be right.)
We also can do what is right. That means we show compassion toward those in need. We help those who need help – showing mercy and not judgment. After all, my own little world will only be better when I am better. God is in control.
Heavenly Father, as you rule all things through your Son, I ask for peace in our country and throughout the world. Please give our leaders and other world leaders the wisdom to look to you for guidance. In the absence of peace around me, give me your peace and help me be loving and kind to everyone without partiality. Help me share your gospel of peace as it is the only thing that will give lasting and meaningful peace. I thank you for this wonderful country in which I live and the freedoms I enjoy. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and King.
