Daily Devotional: Psalms 83:9-13
Ps 83:9-13
9 Do to them as you did to Midian, as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon, 10 who perished at Endor and became like refuse on the ground. 11 Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna, 12 who said, “Let us take possession of the pasturelands of God.” 13 Make them like tumbleweed, O my God, like chaff before the wind.
2 Thess 2:3-4
3 Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. 4 He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
While the interpretation of this latter passage has been the subject of much speculation over the years, we will not attempt to settle it today. What we can agree on is that God is God and all who oppose him are doomed. While many in Bible times sought to oppose God and make themselves as God, so many still do the same today. In fact, many have accepted the philosophies of humanism and in so doing set themselves up as God and even proclaim themselves to be God. He alone is God and still is over all gods made by mankind.
When Israel was being formed as a nation of God’s people and the law was being given to Moses for them to follow, God gave the reason for many of the laws. It was either because God is God and will have no others gods in their midst or it was because of what God had done for them in bringing them out of Egypt.
For God’s people today we are to serve Him with all our heart, our soul and our mind because he alone is God. Jesus is our Lord because he has been given all authority in heaven and earth by the Father. We also serve him because of what God has done for us in delivering us from our bondage of sin. Jesus is our savior and our lawgiver and we owe him our all. So we put him first in our lives, because of gratitude and love for him and because we respect him as God.
Heavenly Father, thank you for giving your Son to die for my sin. I know that I am totally unworthy to be your child. Thank you for your grace because of your love and compassion for me. Help me remember every day that I am forgiven and counted as righteous because of what Jesus has done for me and not because of my own doing. Give me wisdom to use this realization to motivate me to live for you and to practice good deeds in the name of Jesus. Fill my heart with your love and compassion for others so I will help them instead of judging them. Forgive me when I fail you and come short of your glory. I pray in the name of Jesus.
