Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:7-13
Ps 89:7-13
7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. 8 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. 9 You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them. 10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with your strong arm you scattered your enemies. 11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it. 12 You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name. 13 Your arm is endued with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.
Mark 4:37-41
37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
When the Psalms were written, God cared about his people and he was able to save them, no matter what they faced. In the days of Jesus, the storms came and his disciples were afraid. They woke him from his sleep and asked if he did not care if they perished. Jesus spoke the word and the winds stopped blowing and the waves died down. He then told them that the main thing they should be concerned about was their lack of faith.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” This is his world; his land, his heavens and his seas and they all obey his commands. When all of the heavenly hosts and all the spiritual forces come together, they recognize that Jesus has been given all authority and they must obey him. While Satan and his followers seem to think they can prevail, God is the victor. We too can have this final victory when we are in Jesus and live our lives for him.
Heavenly Father, creator of life and all that exists, I am so grateful to you for your wonderful love and your great patience. I need your mercy and your continued forgiveness as I struggle through this life. Help me open my heart to your Spirit and to your bidding that I will become more like you each day. Give me a greater desire to know you by knowing your word and give me wisdom to apply it in my life. Never let me forget that no matter how big or small I am in the eyes of this world, you have made me and all I have and am is by your grace. Give me a heart of a servant and use me to do your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
