Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:38-45
Ps 89:38-45
38 But you have rejected, you have spurned, you have been very angry with your anointed one. 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust. 40 You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins. 41 All who pass by have plundered him; he has become the scorn of his neighbors. 42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes; you have made all his enemies rejoice. 43 You have turned back the edge of his sword and have not supported him in battle. 44 You have put an end to his splendor and cast his throne to the ground. 45 You have cut short the days of his youth; you have covered him with a mantle of shame. 2 Cor 12:9-10
9 But he [God] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Over the years I have been asked why things happen as they do. Usually this is when someone is seeking to know why some tragedy has hit them or someone in their family. It may be a disease, an accident or some natural disaster. The people involved may be godly people seeking to serve the Lord in every way and yet this terrible thing has happened to them. Why me? Why them?
The truth is that we don’t always know why. It may be as simple as a drunk driver made a foolish choice or we have lived an unhealthy lifestyle and now we are receiving the results of doing so. More often, we just do not have an answer. The wise man Solomon says that “time and chance overtake us all.” So we just trust God and pray for his strength and his grace in our lives.
What we do know is that God loves us and he will watch over us and never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear; but we must appropriate his strength in our lives to receive this promise. We must also remember that what really matters is not this life but being ready to live with him in eternity.
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you love me. Increase my faith so I can be more like you in every way and trust you in everything. Help me focus on how I can use what happens to me instead of why it has happened. Give your strength to those who are hurting, struggling and battling diseases. Use me to give comfort to those who are grieved and distressed. I thank you for Jesus my Savior. Help me share his saving power with others in the things I say but even more in the way I live before you and before them. I pray in his holy name.
