Daily Devotional: Psalms 102:23-28
Ps 102:23-28
23 In the course of my life he broke my strength; he cut short my days. 24 So I said: “Do not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations. 25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end. 28 The children of your servants will live in your presence; their descendants will be established before you.”
1 Peter 1:23-25
23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
Forever. Just how long is forever? The years of the Lord go through all generations and know no boundaries of time. Because God is eternal, his word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Jesus could say that “before Abraham was, I am” and thus declare his deity. When the Hebrew writer tells us that Jesus always lives so he can intercede for us before the Father, he is said to be eternal.
John tells us that we are not to love the world or the things of this world because all of these things and the desires they induce will pass away but those who do the will of God will abide forever. We are made for eternity. Although he knew it would take place, it was never in the intended plan of God for man to sin and thus to know death. We were made in the beginning to be in his image and to live with him in eternity. It was our sin that brought death and made an end to our lives.
But because of his great love for us, God demonstrated his mercy in making a way for our sins to be forgiven and allowing us to be restored in his fellowship so we can live with him forever when we leave this earth. It is not something we earn but is the gift of God by grace through the sacrifice of Jesus our Savior.
Lord God, I thank you for your eternal plan and the way of salvation you have provided in Jesus Christ. Thank you for revealing your living and enduring word so I can know your gospel and be forgiven of my sin. Your indescribable wisdom is seen in so many ways and this is one of them. Keep me from making this world my home but help me keep my eyes focused on the things above. Bless those who are sick and their families but help us all realize that we too will soon die so make us ready to live with you in eternity. I pray in the name of Jesus.
