Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:8-15

Ps 105:8-15

8 He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, 9 the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. 10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: 11 “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.” 12 When they were but few in number, few indeed, and strangers in it, 13 they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. 14 He allowed no one to oppress them; for their sake he rebuked kings: 15 “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”

2 Peter 1:3-4

3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

God keeps his word. By his very nature as God, he cannot lie. When God speaks, it is already done in his world but due to time and physical constraints we often must wait for it to come to pass. He told Israel they could know if a prophet came from him and spoke his word by waiting to see if what he said came to pass. His prophecies are not accurate just a majority of the time or even 85 or 90 percent of the time. His word is fulfilled all of the time – it never fails.

The problem with Israel was not God. The problem was they failed to keep their end of the bargain as his people. He took them from Egypt and protected them all along their journey. Several kings and nations mightier than Israel sought to harm or destroy them but he did not allow it. He took them to the land of Canaan he had sworn to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and it was divided among them as he had said. But they were not faithful to him and they turned to idols.

As we come to know Jesus through the word of God we see his many promises to us as his people. We experience his goodness and his protection in our lives. It is through the precious promises of God that we can (and must) clothe ourselves with his divine nature as we become more like him each day.

Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you are my God and for all the protection you give me in this wicked world. Help me have greater faith to trust you in all things and to know your word always comes to pass. Create in me a pure heart that is totally devoted to you and to your service. Keep me from all evil and give me the motivation to do what is right and good. Use me to reach out to lead others to you and to help those in need. I pray in the name of Jesus.
