Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:19-23
Ps 106:19-23
19 At Horeb they made a calf and worshiped an idol cast from metal. 20 They exchanged their Glory for an image of a bull, which eats grass. 21 They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt, 22 miracles in the land of Ham and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. 23 So he said he would destroy them--had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.
James 5:16-20
16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. 19 My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
Moses interceded for Israel and saved them from destruction when they made the calf of gold and worshipped it. It was both for their sakes and for the glory of God that Moses did this. He reasoned that if God destroyed his people and did not take them into the land of Canaan, their enemies would say it was because God was not able to do so and his name would be reproached. God heard Moses and relented and forgave the people of Israel.
We need to have as much concern for the welfare of others today as Moses had for his people then. We need to be ever in prayer for our brothers and sisters in Christ that they might be faithful to God. When we see them wander away in sin, we need to go to them and bring them back to the Lord. Paul says we are to do this with patience. It is with humility and an ever awareness of our own sin that we approach anyone to try to correct them and bring them back. We need to spend time in prayer for each other regarding both spiritual needs and physical needs. God heals both when we trust him.
Lord God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you hear me and my prayer as I come to you about so many things in my life and the lives of others. I see my own weakness and know that I fail to be all you want me to be so I ask you to continue to forgive me. Help me use every failure in my life to make me stronger and more determined to live for you. Use me to help others be faithful to you and use me to encourage those who are struggling with both physical problems as well as those with spiritual needs. I pray in the name of Jesus.
