Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:34-41
Ps 106:34-41
34 They did not destroy the peoples as the LORD had commanded them, 35 but they mingled with the nations and adopted their customs. 36 They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. 37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons. 38 They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. 39 They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves. 40 Therefore the LORD was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance. 41 He handed them over to the nations, and their foes ruled over them.
2 Cor 6:14-18
14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15 What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 17 “Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” 18 “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
One of the basics in the agreement that God made with Israel was that they were to destroy the people that lived in the land of Canaan. They were not to make any treaties with them or intermarry with them. If any were allowed to remain (and God told them to destroy them gradually – not all at once), Israel was to be very careful and not worship their gods. The Lord promised if they did not heed these things that they would be punished by the nations around them.
Paul warns us that we are not to fool ourselves into thinking that we can associate with ungodly people without it having an effect on our lives. While we must live in this world, we are not to become a part of this world. Our home is heaven and not this earth so we are to live in a way that reflects this with our eyes on Jesus.
Lord God, help me choose my companions in a way that will help me live for you and be all you want me to be. At the same time, use me to reach with your gospel those around me that do not know you. Help me not forget that the thing that makes me separate is that you have forgiven me of my sin through the blood of Jesus. Please be with our nation as we live in a time of turmoil and division. Be with our leaders, officials and the news media that they will do all they can to bring about peace among the populace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
